<p>On top of the tinsel, cookies, and questionable sweater choices this season brings, there seems to be one other constant: alcohol. You’re almost certainly going to drink more than you would any other time of the year. More booze, more often, earlier in the evening. Plus all the junk food and snack binges that come with it.</p>
<p>Despite all the potential disastrous fun that’s lurking, you actually can have a great time this holiday season – see your friends, eat and drink, stay out too late – without being hung over all month. And without getting fat by Christmas. But you need a strategy.</p>
<p>At the risk of sounding like a Debbie Downer, if you want to party, you’ve got to follow a few rules. Structure and guidelines will give you freedom.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An old drinking buddy of mine once said, “the third drink is the gateway to bad decisions.” I slurringly replied, “Yah that’s the truth,” and ordered another. The night didn’t end well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moderating yourself on a big night is easier than it sounds. Alternate mocktails with real drinks. Have a club soda or diet coke nearby so you’re not sucking down tequila all night. Or drink light beer (which is mostly water anyway). It will feel like you’re in it for the long haul, but you’ll be drinking a lot less.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So three “real” drinks is your limit. And two is even better.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Avoid fatty, carb-rich foods</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drinks and treats are equally to blame for your post-holiday waistline. And since it isn’t realistic for you to avoid both, you have to learn how to balance them.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On days where you have a holiday party, avoid starchy carbs like bread, pasta, rice, etc. And especially stay away from holiday sweets as much as you can. Eat as much protein and fruit/veggies as you can throughout the day so your body is nourished without the excess calories.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Don’t drink alcohol when you’re hungry</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As tempting as it is to have two glasses of champagne before the hors d&#8217;oeuvre tray heads your way, try to avoid this scenario as much as possible. Have a big lunch or some protein-rich afternoon snacks. And have a solid dinner plan for after the party.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having some food in your stomach (and a plan for later) will keep you buzzing all evening instead of slurring and stumbling by 9PM.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Stay hydrated</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This shouldn’t be too hard if you’re truly alternating mocktails and weak drinks for boozy ones. But regardless of what that looks like, drink water! Alcohol is dehydrating and you’ll thank yourself later for mitigating that.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And not just while you’re out. If you have a big holiday party coming up tonight, get ahead of your water intake early in the day. Sure you may have to pee all night, but it’s better than feeling like crap the entire next day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Planning activities for tomorrow can help keep you honest tonight. Schedule a workout that you’re not going to miss. If it’s a class, trainer session, or workout with a friend, even better.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even a holiday shopping trip can help you burn some calories and sweat a little. And while you can’t literally “sweat out the booze,” some post drinking activity helps get you back on track quickly.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Not-So-Endless Summer</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All good things must come to an end, but don’t fret. Late September and October give us plenty of opportunity to get the warm glow on your skin.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sun exposure isn’t just good for your mind. It’s great for your physical body as well. You may just have to go a little out of your way to get it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s real science behind the lift you feel when the rays hit your skin. Everyone knows that it takes sun exposure to make vitamin D. But sharper focus, deeper sleep, and better workouts are all linked to daytime sun exposure. (Just don’t forget to use some SPF!)</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sunlight triggers serotonin production, and it raises testosterone production in men. Translation: you feel great mentally and physically. More energy, higher motivation, and better movement quality.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Your Transition to a Sun Soaked Fall</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s nothing quite like a sunny walk in the park with the fallen leaves crunching beneath your feet. But sun-soaked walks don’t come as easily as they did in July. You have to make extra effort and break out of your typical day-to-day grind.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t overthink it, though. A few simple moves can help you hold onto the light a little longer:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Outdoor morning ritual. </strong>Get up five to ten minutes earlier, and grab a coffee outside. Take a walk around the block. Enjoy your surroundings instead of just rushing off to your first meeting.</li>



<li><strong>Lunchtime reset. </strong>Get outside for lunch. Even if it’s just a grab-and-go, find a bench and eat outside. A quick break outside beats another scroll session at your desk.</li>



<li><strong>Evening wind down. </strong>If the sun is still out after work, stroll through the neighborhood instead of sinking into the couch right away. It helps digestion, clears your head, and sneaks in movement.</li>



<li><strong>Do nothing at all. </strong>Seriously, just grab a blanket, lay in the grass, and enjoy the warmth while you still can. Maintaining a fit body and mind is about balance. And sometimes the most restorative thing you can do is nothing at all.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Carry It Forward</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ready or not, Fall is coming, and Winter behind it.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fall will change your rhythm, as it always does. Instead of resisting it, try to carry the energy of summer with you. The light may fade, but your habits don’t have to. By soaking up the last weeks of summer, you give yourself fuel to carry into the next season.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But here’s the truth: these rituals aren’t <em>just</em> about the sunshine. They help you to be present in the moment and appreciate what’s around you. And that’s something you can practice regardless of the weather.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Staying healthy and grounded all year isn’t about strict routines or waiting for January for a big do-over. It’s about small, consistent moves that stack up. The morning coffee outside, the extra walk before the sun dips, the choice to be in the moment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So get outside, breathe the air, and enjoy the light while you can. Summer’s not quite done with us yet. And you’ll be glad you chose to squeeze every last drop of it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But when so many things are out of your control, there’s one arena where you get to be in charge: <strong>your mindset and your health.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a few simple steps, you’ll begin to control the things you can. And when you master your own circumstances, everything else becomes manageable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">First Things First: Master Your Mindset</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your outlook has a big impact on how you experience life. When everything around you seems crazy, it’s easy to feel defeated.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Set a daily must-do action</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take two minutes each morning (or the night before) to clarify one non-negotiable action. Something achievable like “I will walk for 10 minutes after lunch,” or “I will drink an extra glass of water.” Complete it no matter what.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This frames your day around a small win, reinforcing your control of the process. And it helps you to build habits. Once you have some footing with this, take on bigger intentions for the day.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Limit your news intake</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Turn off news alerts (seriously)!</strong> If something groundbreaking happens, you’re going to hear about it. You don’t need CNN and the NYT popping up on your home screen all day long. Your distraction is their business model.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check the news 1-2 times daily, max. And remember, watching a bunch of “experts” sit around a table giving analysis, that’s not news. It’s opinion. Try a newspaper instead.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Go on a social media “diet”</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know you’ve heard this one before. But this time, I challenge you to actually do it. Endless-scroll content has a way of creeping into your brain. Don’t let it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take a few weeks off. Unfollow people. Mute political accounts. Don’t let your mind be run by an app.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Celebrate your wins and victories&nbsp;</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you simply took a walk, or cooked dinner five nights in a row, it’s important to celebrate your accomplishments.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Small wins add up to solid habits, which lead to big life changes. When you acknowledge your progress, it’s easier to take ownership and control outcomes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Workouts don’t have to be complicated.</strong> In fact, when it comes to losing fat and building strength, simpler is better.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of the <s>bullshit</s> complicated exercises you see on instagram are only done for the camera. The best bodies – including the IG and TikTok skinfluencers – are built with fundamental strength movements: <strong>squat, push, pull, lunge, hinge.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pick 1-2 exercises from these basic movement categories, create two workouts, and alternate between them. Throw in 30 minutes of cardio 1-2 times per week, and you’ve got yourself a well rounded fitness plan. If you need help, ChatGPT is great at this.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Aim to work out 3-4 days per week. <strong>You can make this happen.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stop Stress Eating and Take Control of Your Diet</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now is not the time to drown your sorrows in comfort food. Chronic stress elevates cortisol (your primary stress hormone), which makes you crave salt, fat, and sugar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stress eating is less about hunger and more about alleviating discomfort. Master these four key habits and you’ll take control of your diet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Habit #1: Plan meals in advance</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meal planning takes the guesswork and uncertainty out of eating. When you know what’s for lunch, you can avoid hangry decision making.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Habit #2: Emphasize protein at every meal&nbsp;</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Protein keeps you fuller longer. It burns calories just to be absorbed and digested. (All foods do this, but protein burns five times more calories than other nutrients).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And most importantly, the amino acids in protein directly feed your muscles, so you can perform better in the gym and in daily life.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Habit #3: Eat vegetables and fruit throughout the day</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Along with protein, fruits and veggies are the most important part of your diet. Their vitamins and nutrients boost immunity and digestive health, help regulate appetite, and reduce inflammation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By eating a wide variety, you’ll help set the stage for optimal health and body composition.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Habit #4: Always have healthy snacks on hand</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A snack attack is an opportunity to eat more fruits and veggies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fruit and berries can help satisfy a sweet tooth. And pre-cut vegetables with hummus or low fat Greek yogurt can satisfy your cravings for a salty crunch.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another strategy is to take a “mindful eating” pause. Introduce small habits that involve pausing before eating. Take a deep breath, assess your hunger, think about your fitness goals, drink some water. Then decide whether you’re hungry, stressed, or bored.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Develop a Nightly Wind-Down Ritual</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You already have <em>some</em> type of nighttime ritual. At the very least, you brush your teeth and turn off the lights.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But the real power comes when you take an hour to intentionally wind down your body and mind.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Work backwards from the time that you absolutely have to be asleep, and start taking actions that will calm your mind and prepare you for deep, restful sleep.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s that time of year again. School’s back in session. The kids have stopped nagging you all day. It’s dusk by 7PM. And except for a bit of late-season luck, rooftop cocktail sunsets are now just a memory.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We love/hate September for all the things it represents. Yes, it’s the end of long, sun-filled days, scantily clad tan flesh, spontaneous beach days, and a break from the grindstone.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But the end of Summer presents us with an opportunity. I remember how exciting it was to buy all new school supplies and plan out all my first week of Fall outfits. Fresh looks, color-coordinated folders and pens, and a chance to “do everything right” this year. No matter how old we get, it’s hard to escape the back-to-school feelings that come after Labor day. Especially now, as much of the world is finally (for real this time) getting back to the office.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So while it’s not exactly “new-year-new-me” season, we have the opportunity to course correct and begin to re-implement some of our more important life goals. After working with a few hundred clients for more than a few years, there seems to be a recurring Big 3 that people want to tackle when summer ends: exercise more, eat healthier, and sleep better.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As much as I’d like to snap my fingers and be in perfect shape instantly, I know that big changes don’t happen overnight. In the same way that your summer wine and cheese layer didn’t just magically appear on your waistline, positive change happens through a buildup of actions and habits over time. So rather than trying to force a wholesale lifestyle overhaul, let’s look at the small daily habits that lead to big, lasting results.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s start with exercise. My advice here is to get to the gym, strength train 3 days per week, do cardio on your off days, and practice some kind of mobility/stretching at least twice per week. But that’s a LOT to take on if you’re not used to it. It’s a lot to manage even for an experienced fitness buff who has a job, family, and life outside the gym.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So we’ll break it into pieces. One of the easiest ways to become consistent with exercise is to have a dedicated gym bag that’s always ready to go. Keep it packed with gym clothes, a water bottle, maybe a heart rate monitor, and a pair of gym shoes. Keep it by the door as a visual reminder that it’s time to work out. If the gym isn’t your thing, keep a pair of running or walking shoes in plain view as a cue to get outside and get moving.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t need a complicated mega plan. All it takes is small daily steps and some visual cues in your environment to take the necessary action.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The same is true for your diet. Have you been eating lobster rolls and kettle chips all summer long? Maybe with a few cold summer ales or a too-delicious orange wine? (If health were no concern, I would eat this every day).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you try to run in the other direction toward Sober September with a side of plain chicken and steamed broccoli, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Start with small, manageable steps. One way to get (and stay) lean is to center each meal around a lean protein source. Not just dinner, but every meal. Make sure your plate always contains high-fiber fruit and veggies (even breakfast). Starchy carbs are okay, but avoid them on days that you’re not particularly active.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The final piece of making this all work is managing your sleep. Good sleep is underrated. And just because your eyes are closed for 7+ hours doesn’t mean you&#8217;re sleeping well. Deep sleep is correlated with leaner body composition, higher muscle mass, and lower stress levels.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ve definitely heard this one before: stop looking at your phone before bed. Seriously, don’t do it any more. If you use the phone as an alarm clock, set it hours before bed and then put your phone away. Set a sleep mode to start at bed time (i.e. no sounds or screen light-ups). The light of the screen interferes with melatonin production (essential for sleep). And whatever pointless crap we’re taking in (news, instagram, etc.) keeps our brains active when they should be winding down.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you’ve tackled the phone habit, make sure you’re sleeping in a dark (think bat cave), cool room. If it’s noisy, use a white noise machine. Deep breathing, meditation, gratitude journals…these things all have a proven link to deeper sleep.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Summer is definitively over. And that’s kind of a bummer. But the return to a predictable routine gives a chance to take control and go after what’s important in life. So whether or not you run out and buy a new fall wardrobe and a matching Trapper Keeper, it’s a great time to harness that back-to-school and get some things done.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having “no time to meditate” is sort of a catch 22 (and probably a half-truth). But if you have this problem, there’s a solution.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I like to practice Walking Meditation. It’s a super easy way to combine movement and mindfulness, and it requires no extra time.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you’re our and about, walk deliberately at a comfortable pace. Once you have a nice cadence, begin to sync your breathing with your steps. Inhale slowly for five steps, exhale slowly for five steps. Do this for five breaths, check in with yourself, and adjust your rhythm as necessary.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This may sound a little hippie dippy, but trust me, it works. When you sync up these otherwise mindless activities, the brain has a way of calming itself. The best part is that you can be in a mega-crowded space, and no one will know you’re meditating.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Movement&nbsp;</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stress and lack of motion are a recipe for a jacked up, stiff body.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And considering our always-on, work-from-home world, deliberate movement is critical. &nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The easiest way to do this is to walk more. Take more walks, park further away, get off the subway one stop earlier. Simply taking a nightly after-dinner walk has major health benefits.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you’ve mastered that habit, add some resistance. Strength training, yoga, and uphill runs will build physical control and mental toughness. And your new slammin’ bod will be a great side benefit.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Meals</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eating healthy is a lot easier when life is calm. More time, fewer cravings, better decisions.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But stress eating doesn’t just come from lack of time or a few bad decisions. There’s a hormonal stress response that makes us crave sweet, salty, fatty foods.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To help mitigate this potential disaster, focus on nutrient-dense, real food. If it came from the ground or it had a face, it’s probably a better choice. If you have to tear open a bag to eat it, proceed with caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you’re feeling clear-headed and focused, take five minutes to plan your options. You don’t have to spend all day in the kitchen, but do think ahead so you can make easy decisions in the moment.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I can only guarantee one thing: the chaos around you will continue. At least for now. But you can fully own your experience of it. So get out, breathe easy, and eat well.&nbsp;</p>

					<description><![CDATA[<p>This is the year I’m finally gonna do it! Workout more, eat healthy, drink less, and go to bed on time. Oh, and be nicer to people. And floss.</p>
<p>Every year we “resolve” to live better, look better, and be kind to our bodies. It was really easy (and fun!) to plan Dry January while downing my third Negroni on December 30th.</p>
<p>But then comes the first Monday of the year. The alarm goes off. It’s too dark, cold, and early for any of this BS. I guess I’ll just have coffee for breakfast and figure out my new-year-new-me diet at lunch. A few days later, I really need to get to the gym. And maybe “dry” January can be weekdays only.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>This is the year I’m finally gonna do it! Workout more, eat healthy, drink less, and go to bed on time. Oh, and be nicer to people. And floss.</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every year we “resolve” to live better, look better, and be kind to our bodies. It was really easy (and fun!) to plan Dry January while downing my third Negroni on December 30th.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But then comes the first Monday of the year. The alarm goes off. It’s too dark, cold, and early for any of this BS. I guess I’ll just have coffee for breakfast and figure out my new-year-new-me diet at lunch. A few days later, I <em>really</em> need to get to the gym. And maybe “dry” January can be weekdays only.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I think you know how this story ends. If by mid-month you find yourself in similar circumstances, you probably had great intentions but didn’t have a plan.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wish lists are nice, but a wish is a destination. And without a plan to change your behavior, you might as well be driving blindfolded. So if you want to make lasting changes for 2022, start with your daily habits.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How would this look if it were easy?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Pick one or two most important goals.</strong> The main problem with New Year’s resolutions is taking on too many things. You’re not going to overhaul your entire life at once. Ever. It’s not possible.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What’s most important to you that wasn’t working in 2021? Single out that goal and give it all your focus.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Start to identify your habits…good and bad.</strong> Keep a closer eye on yourself and write down the things you mindlessly do on a daily basis.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not all of them are bad. I mindlessly brush my teeth first thing every morning. The point here is to be aware of the dozens of other habits you don’t think about. Then you can weed out the actions that are contrary to your main goal.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Make good behaviors easier (and bad behaviors harder).</strong> Want to hit the gym more often? Keep a packed gym bag by the door with your shoes ready to go. This will eliminate some of the friction between you and actually getting to the gym.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Want to stop eating snacks or drinking wine after work? Remove these things from your house entirely. The key to willpower is never having to use it. When you eliminate temptation, it’s easier to stay the course.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Don’t be afraid to hire a coach.</strong> Whether you’re trying to overhaul your closet or your entire body, it helps to have outside expertise.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of our daily habits are so ingrained that we don’t see their impact. The small cookie you mindlessly eat with your afternoon coffee seems like nothing until your pants don’t fit.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It feels like we “should” be able to do it all on our own, but if something didn’t work the last few times you tried, it might be time to enlist outside help.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So far, 2022 is looking like a crapshoot. Will it be hot girl summer or hot sweaty facemask? Who the hell knows. But one thing is certain: you can control your actions day to day. And when you add them all up, you’ll start to accomplish your most important resolutions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the first time in my not-so-short life, I’m not going home for the holidays. It took a lot to pull this off. There were many years of dutifully flying off to relatives’ houses to eat too much, drink too much, and argue about politics. But this year, rather than wind up <em>in a home</em> for the holidays, I’m going on vacation instead.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But I realize not everyone is so lucky. And whether you’re traveling to see family or escape them, you’ll be a lot happier going into 2023 if you don’t fall off the wagon this December. It takes some planning and strategy, but you <em>can</em> maintain a workout schedule even while traveling for the holidays. Here are my favorite ways to take control, maintain your fitness, and finish this year on top.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first thing to do is set aside time during your trip. Whether it’s 20 minutes when you first wake up, or an hour after lunch, commit to yourself that this is your time to focus on your fitness and health. Let the people around you know that you’re doing this. Once you’ve completed this appointment with yourself, the rest of the day is more relaxed.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most underrated forms of fitness is walking. It’s also the most accessible. Taking a brisk walk elevates your heart rate and breathing, and it can serve as a head-clearing break from the holiday heaviness. If your travel destination involves snow, ice and sub-freezing cold, this might not be an option for you. (Maybe take a brisk walk at the mall?) But if you can swing it, even a 10-minute daily walk will make a big difference for your physical and mental health.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you can carve out a little more time for yourself (and a few extra square feet of space), working out with resistance bands is the best way to stay strong without an actual gym. Bands are lightweight, they fit easily in your luggage, and they can provide a lot of resistance for strength training.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Search the web for large resistance bands that look like huge rubber bands (41” is ideal). Grab a few different resistance levels, and a door anchor if possible. There are a ton of great band exercises on YouTube. Do some research before you travel, and bookmark the workouts that look like you’d actually do them.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another hugely underrated component of fitness is sleep. Quality sleep improves every other aspect of your physical health, from strength to cognition to appetite regulation. And being well rested makes you less likely to snap at your annoying uncle who watches cable news for 12 hours a day. But all of the heavy food, excess drinking, and disrupted schedules have a way of eroding sleep quality.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One way to mitigate this is with a nightly wind down routine. In the same way that you set an appointment with yourself to work out, take 10 minutes at the end of the day to reflect on the day, focus on your breathing, and set some intentions…whether it’s for tomorrow’s workouts or next year’s accomplishments. These small acts have a way of calming your mind down so you can fall asleep faster and sleep better.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s no cure for holiday stress or travel-related insanity. You’ll probably eat too much. You may want your trip to be over yesterday when you still have three days left. But if you take some time for yourself and bring a few accessories, you can take care of your body and keep doing what’s important to you.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m sure I’ll be in the trenches again next year. But until then, travel safe, eat well, and stay fit.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s easy to feel like you have no control, and fall into a booze- and snack-fueled stupor. But before you waddle into your sixth hour of Netflix and <em>not</em> chill, check out these strategies to relax, regain control of your day, and do your body good.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Keep a consistent schedule, even if you have nothing to do.</strong> It’s so easy to sleep the hell in and wake up whenever you damn well please. It feels great. One of my favorite things to do, really.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But this isn’t a snow day. This is your life for the foreseeable future. So if you want to have control over your life in uncertain times, take command of your daily schedule. It’s an easy fix that will put you in the driver’s seat of your day.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wake up and go to sleep at the same time. Make an appointment with yourself to work out or get some kind of movement. Set a workout alarm if you have to. And set a reminder to get ready for bed&#8230;put the phone away, dim the lights, and prepare your body to sleep.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Which brings us to the second strategy&#8230;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Get enough sleep, and manage your stress levels. </strong>You have a unique opportunity to get the right amount of sleep every night. In normal times, getting 8 hours of sleep nightly can be tough for most people. Now, not so much.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your nightly wind down is the key to getting into a restful, sleepy state. If, like most people, you’re boozing up at home more than usual, cut it off an hour or two before you go to bed. Then put away your phone/laptop/tablet, and don’t look at it again.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, sit quietly and take some slow, deep breaths. Focus on your mind on your breathing, check your posture, and observe where your body is tight. Count breaths if it helps you focus. Do this for at least 3 minutes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you can, do this exercise twice a day. Managing your anxiety during the day will help you feel more relaxed, in-control, and ready to wind down when it’s time to sleep.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Work out and move your body every day.</strong> From yoga to group workouts to online personal training, there are thousands of options for you to stay fit at home.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you haven’t worked out much before, this is a great opportunity to start something new. Seasoned gym goers can take advantage of resistance bands or an all-bodyweight challenge. (It’s harder than you think.)&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Working out at the same time every day will help you establish the habit. Once the daily habit is set in stone, you will get it done without having to think about it, and your day will have a sense of structure and control.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’re all scratching at the door to get back to our “real lives,” however that’s going to look. But try not to fall into a state of suspended animation. This is your life, for the time being at least, so do what you can to make the most of your new found free time.</p>
