The Response

Incongruity is underrated if you ask me. The bizarre, absurd, the playful. I love a photo, or any other art form for that matter, that makes me laugh, gasp, takes my breath away, that makes me weep. Photography is more than something pretty to look at it. It draws you in, gets you thinking, lingers like a lovers perfume on your lapel, hours after an engagement.

Give me a bent nose, an overly verbose black ball gown in the oppressing Nevadan heat, a story of a lovers first glance across a crowded cold ferry ride to sweep me off my feet and swell my soul. That’s my quest to capture as an artist.

Pretty is the presentation, allure and intrigue are the remnants of coffee left behind in the vessel. What was said with the coffee, and with whom? What paired with the nectar of life? Milky smooth Columbian froth subsides and what remains is the core, the substance of it all.

As we close out 2019, take heed of your vessel. Fill your cup with abundance and substance, and cry out Karjaka for an incongruous response.

Aleksandr Karjaka came to New York for the music, but stayed for the visuals. As a classically trained musician, he’s had the honor of performing with some of the greatest musicians, and artistic houses, in the world. Often quoted as "Listening through his eyes." he's photographed the lives and stories of thousands of artists of all fields over the years. Here are their KARJAKA portraits.

Try This. Try That.

Yes, it's a Chanel Bottle with KARJAKA photoshopped on to it. No, Chanel has not called begging for KARJAKA... yet. It's a black box, a floating orb of wonder and nothingness, and it looks...fine.    It is easy to do what you know. Me, I know eyes, the soul, heart, that grey area in the deep recesses of the mind. There's a conversation in portraiture. Unfortunately products don't talk back, let alone Fashion with a capital F. Products, Fashion have mission statements and mantras behind their shiny exteriors. That primary message? Love me, adore me, own me. Advertising 101, yet not far off from humans. Have you been on social media recently?Portraiture, however elicits the response to be seen,... to be seen when hiding in plain sight.

Polaroid Portraits

I miss Polaroids. With having a phone on me at all times, my Polaroid collection spends more time on my display shelves than it does on my person. I'll spare you from my lament on digital everything, however there was something special about being a product of the 80s and having polaroid snapshots from events around the house. That being said, we thought we'd start incorporating a tip or two under Polaroid Portraits in each issue, as we've been getting more out reach on Instagram and Facebook for technique and purchasing tips and the like.

Monday Musings: Who’s a Good Boy?

I can relate to the dog who's on a leash outside the coffee shop, as its master is inside exploring all that can be had via Italian dark roasts. The waiting. The anticipation. The Anxiety. Will my master return, or in my case, will the moment present itself for that quintessential KARJAKA snap that only I, Aleks, the Karjaka, can capture?
