KARJAKA MAGAZINE
The Magazine

We exist to witness.

We tell stories about the making of things, for creatives and the culture they're building, because process is just as important as product.

To find the extraordinary living inside the ordinary lives.

Our work lives at the intersection of film, fashion, photography and music. Not as separate disciplines, but as one language spoken in three dialects. We use it to tell stories that are rooted in culture, shaped by people, and honest enough to last.

We don't chase moments. We earn them.

KARJAKA Magazine is a publication about people who make things. Artists, musicians, fashion designers, chefs, dancers, and the writers who pay close attention to them.

It began as a photographer's notebook and became something larger. More than350 pieces now sit in the archive, written by77 contributors, most of them practitioners first and writers second. A composer on influence. A soprano on what a rehearsal room does to a voice. An architect on a building nobody visits anymore. The work is written by the people inside it.

The printed run reaches Issue No. 114 — 1,273 typeset pages, over a thousand of them searchable, read in the same reader on every issue page.

A cornucopia of categories — fashion, design, architecture, music, art, and the places where those meet. Some rooms are fuller than others. That is deliberate. The taxonomy is the ambition, not an inventory of what we have already done.

Who makes it

KARJAKA Magazine is published by KARJAKA, a house founded by Aleksandr Karjaka, an editorial portrait photographer in New York. A classical musician himself, he has photographed musicians and makers for over 20 years and keeps a working archive of that period.

Our editorial staff is led by our Global Creative Director Jeff Karly, and our Global Design Director Justin Brown, the two heartbeats behind KARJAKA.

The house of KARJAKA runs in divisions.KARJAKA/Prints, a gallery for limited editions and posters. KARJAKA/Imaging, camera-based reproduction for artists, galleries and collections. KARJAKA/Studios, production. And the Archive, which is the reason for the rest of it.
