Summertime is the weekend of the year. And guess what: Monday has arrived. Beach days are a memory. And rosé all day is a next year thing.

You’ll soon be settling into pumpkin pie-flavored drinks, Spirit Halloween on every corner, and commuting in the dark.

And sweaters. Thick, cozy sweaters. 

But before you throw in the towel on good-day sunshine, there’s still time to find your light. 

The Not-So-Endless Summer

All good things must come to an end, but don’t fret. Late September and October give us plenty of opportunity to get the warm glow on your skin. 

Sun exposure isn’t just good for your mind. It’s great for your physical body as well. You may just have to go a little out of your way to get it.

There’s real science behind the lift you feel when the rays hit your skin. Everyone knows that it takes sun exposure to make vitamin D. But sharper focus, deeper sleep, and better workouts are all linked to daytime sun exposure. (Just don’t forget to use some SPF!)

Sunlight triggers serotonin production, and it raises testosterone production in men. Translation: you feel great mentally and physically. More energy, higher motivation, and better movement quality. 

Your Transition to a Sun Soaked Fall

There’s nothing quite like a sunny walk in the park with the fallen leaves crunching beneath your feet. But sun-soaked walks don’t come as easily as they did in July. You have to make extra effort and break out of your typical day-to-day grind.

Don’t overthink it, though. A few simple moves can help you hold onto the light a little longer:

  • Outdoor morning ritual. Get up five to ten minutes earlier, and grab a coffee outside. Take a walk around the block. Enjoy your surroundings instead of just rushing off to your first meeting.
  • Lunchtime reset. Get outside for lunch. Even if it’s just a grab-and-go, find a bench and eat outside. A quick break outside beats another scroll session at your desk.
  • Evening wind down. If the sun is still out after work, stroll through the neighborhood instead of sinking into the couch right away. It helps digestion, clears your head, and sneaks in movement.
  • Do nothing at all. Seriously, just grab a blanket, lay in the grass, and enjoy the warmth while you still can. Maintaining a fit body and mind is about balance. And sometimes the most restorative thing you can do is nothing at all.

Carry It Forward

Ready or not, Fall is coming, and Winter behind it. 

Fall will change your rhythm, as it always does. Instead of resisting it, try to carry the energy of summer with you. The light may fade, but your habits don’t have to. By soaking up the last weeks of summer, you give yourself fuel to carry into the next season. 

But here’s the truth: these rituals aren’t just about the sunshine. They help you to be present in the moment and appreciate what’s around you. And that’s something you can practice regardless of the weather.

Staying healthy and grounded all year isn’t about strict routines or waiting for January for a big do-over. It’s about small, consistent moves that stack up. The morning coffee outside, the extra walk before the sun dips, the choice to be in the moment.

So get outside, breathe the air, and enjoy the light while you can. Summer’s not quite done with us yet. And you’ll be glad you chose to squeeze every last drop of it.

Getting Grounded with Richard Gere & Craig Thomas

May is absolutely one of my favorite months. The Kentucky Derby kicks off Spring for me. The days are always getting longer as the month heads toward its finish line. Kids culminate a long year of school work by the end of May.

Love Thy Self

As a 1st generation Filipino-American pianist, composer, and violinist now in mid-life, my path to learning to love and accept myself has been an adventure.
